Diversity Statement
From a social science perspective, I consider the commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) to be both a moral virtue and a rational imperative for success in today’s interconnected world. Morally, DEI reflects an ideal state where every individual, regardless of race, gender, belief, sexual orientation, appearance, or ability, deserves equal respect and dignity in a tolerant, cosmopolitan society. As a Chinese national living and working in the United States during a period of strained U.S.-China relations, I have come to appreciate the immense value of fostering open, tolerant, and inclusive environments, which not only promote mutual understanding but also mitigate the alienation and biases that often emerge in polarized contexts. I believe that advancing DEI is integral to the global integration of talent and ideas. The free flow of people and perspectives across borders enriches intellectual and economic endeavors, bolstering the competitiveness of individuals, institutions, and nations. For this reason, I am committed to cultivating environments that embody openness, inclusivity, and respect for diversity.
In my teaching, I strive to create a classroom environment that values all voices, particularly those of underrepresented or marginalized groups. Drawing on my own experiences and the challenges I have witnessed, I encourage open discussions among students, fostering a respectful exchange of ideas to build critical thinking skills. Recognizing that female and minority students may sometimes feel less empowered to participate, I make deliberate efforts to ensure their voices are heard. This includes creating opportunities for them to express their perspectives and offering extra support when needed, whether through one-on-one meetings or additional feedback on assignments. Moreover, I have a strong commitment to mentorship and resource-sharing, inspired by the generous support I have received throughout my academic journey. I actively mentor students, particularly from underrepresented backgrounds, to help them navigate academic challenges, explore professional opportunities, and develop confidence in their abilities. For example, I provide guidance to students who are navigating complex academic systems, whether by connecting them with campus resources, recommending scholarship opportunities, or sharing effective learning strategies. Finally, as someone who has experienced language barriers and cultural adjustment firsthand, I understand the challenges faced by non-native speakers and international students. I strive to support these students in building their communication skills and integrating into the academic community. Whether by helping them improve their writing or offering tailored workshops, I aim to ensure they have equal opportunities to succeed.
I firmly believe that a commitment to DEI is not just a personal or institutional priority; it is a shared responsibility that enriches all of us. By fostering open, inclusive, and equitable environments, we not only uphold moral principles but also build stronger, more vibrant communities.
